Arraigo

« Back to Glossary Index

Arraigo is a special residency permit for people who have been living in Spain without legal status but have strong ties to the country. It allows them to legalize their situation and obtain a residence and work permit. With the new immigration law reform (valid from 20th May 2025), the types of arraigo will be updated, reducing the required residence period from three to two years in most cases. The new types are: arraigo social (family ties or an integration report); arraigo sociolaboral (work contract of at least 20 hours per week); arraigo socioformativo (professional training in high-demand sectors); arraigo de segunda oportunidad (for people who previously had a residence permit but couldn’t renew it); arraigo familiar (for parents of Spanish or EU citizen children, spouses or registered partners of Spanish citizens and dependents of Spanish citizens).
